Students may no longer have have the ‘Snow Day’ excuse, classes are going online

February 4, 2014

Nowadays, more Americans are able to take advantage of the “work from home” option, where employees can complete daily tasks away from the office at ease. This perk may come in handy on days when commuting may not be feasible, but when the kids have a snow day, it might not be as easy to join in the fun anymore.

Because working from home allows this type of access, the barriers around weather and transportation concerns are taken down, and it will soon be removed by school children as well through long-distance education, the Chicago Tribune reported. Also known as “tele-schooling,” students who are given a laptop or tablet by their district are able to access online lessons and assignments anywhere.

“I told my kids, ‘If we’re not here, we can’t fall behind,’ “Steve Kurfess, a math teacher at Conant High School in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, told the Tribune. “Especially with math, every day is taken into account.”

In Kurfess’s classroom, a vast majority of exams and projects are completed on tablets. He took the initiative to adjust data processes to tailor to the classroom of the future. This growing trend towards paperless classrooms in the Midwest is happening throughout the United States because more school districts are catching on that a paperback or hardcover textbook may no longer cut it in the 21st century.

“The future of learning is that textbooks are supplemental,” Dare County superintendent Sue Burgess told the Dare County Voice. “They are not the one and only source of information.”
