Over the summer at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minnesota, many members of its human resources department left the institution. On top of running on a paper-based, data entry services for their payroll, many staffers and faculty may find that they have not been accurately paid, according to the Pioneer Press.
The news source explained that nearly every employee in the HR department had been replaced with a new hire, including a division director. The high turnover rate is believed to be part of the payroll problem.
Metro State is unsure how many workers were affected by these discrepancies, which employs about 170 full-time and 689 part-time instructors. There are also many more workers in non-teaching roles who could be a part of this situation. Due to the magnitude of the issue at hand, the university hired an auditor and asked all workers to look at their pay stubs within the last six months.
For some professors who taught summer courses at Metro State, they are waiting for checks that could “exceed $5,000,” an anonymous staff member told the source.
“There’s people on campus who haven’t been paid,” said the staff member. “Or their amount of pay was like $8. It’s not just step [increases],” the staffer added.
The Minnesota university will be revamping its electronic database management services, which includes an online payroll program and a team of data-entry personnel.
